If you own a shipping container, one of the things you will have to think about is its maintenance. However, this is not something that you will have to overthink or wonder about.

Those of you who want to learn more about containers, in general, can always contact Container Options and ask all that you need to know. Now, when it comes to shipping container maintenance, it includes several simple processes that we are looking forward to explaining to you in the text below.

Place Container on Level Surface

This is something that you will have to think about before you purchase a container. You will have to make sure that the surface you place it on is as level as possible. That way you can be sure that one side of the container isn’t continually exposed to water, thus, preventing corrosion. Furthermore, this means you will have to place this unit in a well-drained area.

Clean the Dirt and Rust

The rust is almost inevitable if you don’t maintain your shipping container regularly. Now, when dirt accumulates in certain places, this metal surface will be easy to puncture or damage in any other way. That is why you should make sure to clean your container on a regular basis.

Also, keep in mind that some companies will advertise their products as rustproof. This is especially true for containers made from corten steel, which is more resistant to corrosion in comparison to the type of materials. However, it is not absolutely rustproof and it will need treatment to prevent corrosion as well. So, to make sure that your container is in a good condition, you should look for the parts that have been exposed to water, cut, or scratched. Once you locate them, treat them by rustproofing, painting or sealing.

Besides that, make sure that your container is always properly cleaned. That will also help prevent corrosion and it will be easier to detect damages.

Prevent Condensation

To be sure that your container lasts longer, you should also prevent condensation. It can cause severe damage, especially on used units. Though some containers have installed vents, there are other caution measures you should comply with.

First, make sure that you store in your shipping containers only dry goods. Second, do not open doors when it’s raining. And third, do not place sensitive items against the container walls. This way you will prevent condensation from damaging your property.

Apply Grease on Door Hinges

Since shipping containers have a few moving parts, you should make sure that they are well-maintained as well. This is especially important when it comes to doors hinges, which need frequent inspection and cleaning. You will have to clean them with commercial steel cleaner and that way removes the above-mentioned rust and dirt. After that, apply grease in the form of a lubricating spray. This treatment will prevent door hinges from getting stuck.

Take a Look At Rubber Gaskets

Have in mind that container doors usually incorporate rubber gaskets that create a sealed environment for items stored inside. It will take around ten years before they will need to be replaced, still, you should inspect their condition as well. If you notice signs of tears, change them as soon as possible. That way the inside of your container will be safe from snow and rain.

Check the Insulation and Refrigeration

In case your container is insulated, you should inspect that as well. Carefully check every wall for cracks or scratches and, if there are any, make sure to fix or replace damaged parts. If your container is refrigerated as well, you will have to service the refrigeration unit periodically. To do so, you should hire a qualified technician who will be able to detect and fix electrical and mechanical problems.
